Damage

  • small burrows in turf areas
  • newly planted rice;
  • eat baitfish and small game fish or their eggs.

Sometimes the damage can be quite severe. Note the photo below, where a crayfish, living in the soil below, dug its way up through a newly laid rubber surface in a newly established playground. Damage to the surface came to over 20,000 dollars. Photo courtesy of Gina Scheller.

Solutions

Habitat Modification

  • Use deep tillage or drainage to destroy burrows or reduce populations;
  • Use chemical control on insect prey.
