Mange (Sarcoptic)

Infectious agent: Sarcoptes scabiei

This deadly infection is caused by a mite that burrows into the skin, Coyote (Canis lupus) suffering from severe mange. Photo by John Consolinicausing intense itching.

Note the photo of the coyote (Canis latrans) on the right. The reason why this animal looks so scraggly is because it has very little fur left. During the winter, severe cases of mange result in the animal's death through hypothermia.

Mange occurs in three forms:

  • Demodectic
  • Notoedric
  • Sarcoptic
