WHAT ARE THE DUTIES? The Wildlife Specialist will conduct a wildlife damage management program and assist other Wildlife Specialists in the surrounding areas. The Specialist will carry out activities of managing problem wildlife in rural and urban areas. The Specialist will work with local agricultural producers to protect livestock, livestock feed, crops, and human health and safety by controlling predators, birds, beavers and other nuisance mammals. The Specialist will also work with County, State and Federal agencies to protect endangered salmon from predatory fish and birds. The position requires use of various control tools that may include pesticides, cage traps, leg-hold traps, conibear traps, shooting, aerial gunning, fishing with rod and reel, pyrotechnics and various non-lethal tools. The position requires the operation/maintenance of a government vehicle, power boats, laptop computer, and hand/power tools. The position requires excellent physical condition, as heavy lifting and walking are required. Adverse weather conditions such as heat, cold, and precipitation may be encountered.
ARE THERE SPECIAL CONDITIONS OR REQUIREMENTS?
EMERGENCY RESPONSE: APHIS is an emergency response agency. This means that all Agency employees may be asked or assigned to participate in rotating temporary duty assignments to support emergency programs at some time during their careers with APHIS. It is difficult to predict the frequency with which such emergency situations may occur – and could range from several emergencies in a year to none over the course of many years. In the event that you are called upon to support an emergency program, this may require irregular working hours, including overtime, and may include duties other than those specified in your official position description. While some emergency program support assignments may be able to be performed at the employee’s current duty station, in other cases employees may be asked to go on-site to a temporary duty station location. In addition, it may be necessary for employees to participate in multiple rotations to an emergency program assignment. Attempts will be made to keep disruption to the employee to a minimum. SUPPLEMENTAL EXPERIENCE The following questions are to be answered on a separate sheet of paper. (You may choose to respond in question/answer format or include the information in a resume.) FACTOR 1: A general background in a biological or agricultural field which demonstrates your ability to learn basic wildlife damage management methods including; the use of firearms, pesticides, traps, identifying wildlife, and solving wildlife problems.
FACTOR 2: ABILITY TO PLAN AND ORGANIZE WORK: Describe experiences that would demonstrate your ability to work independently, plan and organize work. FACTOR 3: ABILITY TO DEAL EFFECTIVELY WITH OTHERS: What experience do you have in dealing with others? Have you had to negotiate issues or handle controversial matters? Describe. NOTE: The questions in Factors 1-3 of the Supplemental Experience need to be signed and dated. Exaggeration or misstatements may be cause for your disqualification or later removal from the program. Be sure that you have given complete information about your experience. You cannot be given credit for work that you do not tell us about.

The Missouri USDA-APHIS-Wildlife Services program is recruiting a Wildlife Specialist (Biological Science Technician) to manage human/wildlife conflicts in the St. Louis metropolitan area. This position is a full-time, 13 month term appointment with benefits, and a starting salary of $29,726 (AD-404-5). The term may be renewed after completion of a 12 month probationary period, contingent upon performance and available funds. A B.S. in wildlife management or closely related field is desired. Wildlife trapping techniques, bird harassment experience, and firearms familiarity, are a plus. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual beginning a career in wildlife damage management. Starting date is negotiable, but we prefer the incumbent to start as soon as possible. Relocation costs will not be paid for this position. Must be able to obtain a Missouri driver’s license and pass a pre-employment drug test.
